A:A hackathon is a sprint-like event, during which participants create solutions to real-life challenges. Using creativity and technology, participants engage mentors and create prototypes, fresh concepts, and other innovations.
Q: WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE AN IDEA FOR THE HACKATHON?
A:You don’t need an idea before the event. Most people don’t. Once the hackathon begins and you talk to other people, you might come up with an idea or you can always collaborate with someone else on their idea. For BizHacks events, we usually provide cases for participants to choose.
Q: WHAT IS THE GOAL OF A HACKATHON?
A: Hackathons drive innovation through crowdsourced solutions. Designers, developers, entrepreneurs, and other creators collaborate to help various industries embrace new technology, test ideas before deployment, and more.
Q:HACKATHON! SOUNDS SCARY, I'M NOT A CODER. CAN I PLAY?
aYes, you sure can. Because of the fairly abstract nature of BizHacks and the level of maturity of solutions, it is logical and absolutely welcome to have participants focus on concepts, designs, business models etc. We hope for several breakthrough ideas and we’re confident they won’t only be software solutions! If you’re wanting to learn how to code outside of a hackathon, there’s a fantastic blog post that you should read. After, you should check out the following: Treehouse, Codecademy and BitDegree to get started.
Q:I JUST GRADUATED, CAN I STILL COME TO BIZHACKS EVENT?
A:Yes. Anyone who is in school or graduated only for 2 years or less is eligible to attend, no matter what your qualifications or experience! It will look good on your CV, too. We welcome all highschool and graduate students too!
Q:WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE A LOT OF EXPERIENCE WITH PROGRAMMING OR TECHNOLOGY. IS THIS EVENT FOR ME?
A:YES! People with all types of experience and expertise will be attending. Your understanding of the industry problems facing companies and communities from a business perspective means you have unique ideas! Mentors will be provided to assist teams with their projects. We care most about creating an environment where you can have fun, learn, share your expertise in nursing and transform your ideas into solutions!
Q: WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE A TEAM AND AM COMING AS AN INDIVIDUAL?
A:GREAT! You will have the opportunity to hear different ideas "pitched" and you can decide which idea interests you and join a team. We’ll also have GREET-and-MEET event to match students who have not had a team.
Q: How big can my team be?
A: Teams are usually 4-5 people in size. Don’t worry if you can’t find your team beforehand, staff at the event will help you find other teammates and provide you with many opportunities to find others to help! We’ll also try our best to match you with others beforehand.
Q: What happens to the ideas generated at the Hackathon?
A: Ideas are only ideas until fully developed to become fundable projects or even a startup business. This may take many revisions of the idea. In some cases, an idea becomes fully manifested as a startup company. However, many find the hackathon an ideal place to form a team.
Q: What if I don’t know anybody there?
A: Not to worry! You’ll meet people when you get there. Everybody’s very friendly. A lot of people go to hackathons without teams. So, it’s perfectly normal to go around to people, tell them you’re looking for a team, and ask if you can help out. Hackathons will often run team-matching sessions at the start to help you meet people. And you can often join a Facebook group for the event beforehand and post there to find potential teammates. Protip: Invite your friends to come to the hackathon too! That way you’re guaranteed to have at least one familiar face.
